The Philippine flag was ripped during the flag ceremony led by Vice President Leni Robredo on Rizal Day, Sunday, December 30, 2018, at the Rizal Park (Luneta) in Manila.

Robredo facilitated the wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument, according to GMA News' report.

The Philippine Marines had to lower down the flag and replace it with a new one after it was ripped.

The said ceremony was held to mark the 122nd anniversary of the death of National Hero Jose Rizal.

During the event, Robredo, in a statement cautioned against hate and said that the change Filipinos want to see should start from within.

"In these times when ruthless practicality is foisted on us as virtue, and when respect for individual dignity is maligned as weakness, Rizal stands as a reminder that true freedom always goes hand in hand with kindness and integrity," she said.

Our national hero, a doctor and novelist, was executed for the crime of rebellion against the Spanish colonial government on December 30, 1896.
