Manila, Philippines - President Rodrigo Duterte alleged former Interior secretary and presidential candidate Mar Roxas of being the mastermind of Cebu Mayor Vicente Loot’s ambush.

Loot is Roxas’ former police aide and now a mayor of Daanbantayan, Cebu.

The president, in a speech in Davao City on Tuesday, first denied any involvement in the ambush of Loot and tagged Roxas who allegedly ordered it.

"Si Loot, dalawang beses na inambush hindi mapatay-patay. Hindi ako ang nagpa-ambush sa kanya, si Roxas," Duterte said in Cebuano

"Sinabihan siya na 'yang senior police aide mo nasa droga 'yan. Kaya nagalit si Roxas. Sabi niya patayin na lang ninyo para hindi tayo mapahiya. So inabutan na ng panahon ko [bilang presidente]," he added.

In May 2018, the retired police general survived an ambush that wounded his driver-bodyguard at the town’s wharf in Barangay Maya.

The president had long tagged Loot, along with other police generals of protecting drug lords which he denied, saying that he would not have the power to protect any criminal in the last seven years of his service in the police because he had been “purely administrative in nature.”

Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo was quick to clarify the president’s recent pronouncement, saying it was obviously a joke.

“Obviously PRRD was saying it in jest making it appear that he was telling his crowd in confidence with his Psst,” Panelo said

“His pet peeve is Loot because of his involvement in drugs and he is known to be a protégé of Roxas,” he added, noting that somebody who was present at the event said many in the audience who understood the joke laughed at it.
