Manila, Philippines - “Cruel and brutal” are the words from President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday saying that communist rebels do not deserve mercy.

The president said that he no longer consider the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) as revolutionaries but “criminals.”

“They are all criminals.  Do not consider them revolutionary. They are just plain bandits and that is the way we should treat them,” the chief executive said in his speech during the Barangay Summit on Good Governance Region XI in Davao City.

He said that he would just “finish” the rebels whom the president said were in continuous rebellion “24 hours a day” by asking for money around the community “and killing them if we don’t give.”

“Why do I need to have a warrant? By the fact that you are a rebel you are a 24-hour violator of the Revised Penal Code of rebellion,” Duterte said

He also warned that he would soon stop accepting rebel surrenderers and would instead order to finish them all.

The peace talks between the government and CPP-NPA was terminated in November 2017 after the rebels launched a series of attacks against the government troops.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea announced on Tuesday that there will be no holiday ceasefire despite CPP founding Chairman Joma Sison’s pronouncement that they are ready to temporarily stop the fighting this yuletide season.
