Senatorial aspirant and Magdalo party list representative Gary Alejano has submitted a bill seeking to declare July 12 as "West Philippine Sea Victory Day."

The House Bill No. 8809 aims to mark the country's victory on July 16, 2016 when the Philippines won in the arbitration case against China in the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands  which invalidated China’s “nine-dash line."

“It is important that we preserve the significance of the ruling; to ensure that our rights and access over the resources (in the West Philippine Sea) are upheld,” Alejano said in statement on Thursday.

Under the proposed bill, the Department of Foreign Affairs will be tasked to plan and implement activities for the West Philippine Sea Victory Day to “ensure its meaningful observance."

Further, it will also mandate the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHEF) to include the said victory in the history.
