Duterte fires PhilHealth president over costly trips amid incurred losses of the agency

President Rodrigo Duterte has fired another official-Philippine Health Corp (PhilHealth) interim president Ma. Jude dela Serna.

She was fired over alleged costly trips and expenses while state-run health insurance agency is incurring billions of losses.

Though the Palace did not issue a statement about the news, it released a letter to the PhilHealth board stating that the president has appointed another official -Roy Ferrer as the acting president of the firm.

“I am pleased to inform you that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has approved the nomination of Mr. Roy B. Ferrer as Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation,” Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea signed letter states.

Dela Serna’s alleged travel expenses to and from Bohol to Manila totaled P627, 000 last year - which also includes plane fare and hotel accommodation costs.

Meanwhile, Dela Serna insisted that all her travels were authorized.

President Rodrigo Duterte has fired several officials over excessive or unnecessary travels, that includes former interior secretary Ismael Sueno, former Presidential Commission on Urban Poor Terry Ridon and his four commissioners, Development Academy of the Philippines president Elba Cruz, former Dangerous Drugs Board chairman Dionisio Santiago, former Maritime Industry Authority administrator Marcial Amaro III, Commission on Higher Education chair Patricia Licuanan and customs deputy commissioner Noel Prudente.

PhilHealth employees had earlier called on Dela Serna’s resignation over incompetence and corruption.
