In wake of President Rodrigo Duterte’s challenge to Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella claims that the president might have evidence to prove that mentioned names were corrupt.

Abella’s claim came after the president dared the Chief Justice and the Ombudsman to resign with him.

The Palace Official also said that both institutions were being used by some political forces to oust the president from his post.

Abella added that nothing can stop the president from calling the Chief Justice and the Ombudsman’s resignation.

Sereno is facing an impeachment case at the House of the Representative while the Duterte supporters group Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) is planning to charge the Ombudsman with the same complaint.

“The President believes the Supreme Court Justice and the Ombudsman have allowed themselves to be used by certain political forces to discredit him and his administration in order to spark public outrage and eventually oust him from the presidency,” Abella said.

“It’s the President’s prerogative to make that call,” Abella added.

When further asked about the evidence, Abella said that he trust President Duterte on the evidence matter being a lawyer himself.

“I’m sure he does. He’s a lawyer. He knows he must speak out on the substantial evidence he has,” Abella said.

“The President is simply stating his opinion about the matter. So it’s not trying to create trial by publicity,” he added, noting that Duterte’s tirades against the Chief Justice and the Ombudsman were not meat to spark their “trial by publicity”.

Meanwhile, Abella also said that the President continues to respect the institutions amid his controversial statements.

“President Duterte respects the institution, however, the practices of certain people there may be suspect,” he said.

And added “The President has basically said it he will not submit to that. In other words, he finds their position suspect.”
