Wife asked for P620 million settlement - Comelec chair Andres Bautista

Comelec Commissioner Andres Bautista  (ctto)

Right after the wife of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Baustista went to expose her husband’s ill-gotten wealth, the commissioner was seen on series of interviews and media appearances to explain his side.

Patrcia Paz, the estranged wife of Andy Bautista, claimed that her husband has undeclared wealth amounting to nearly P1 billion. She also presented the passbooks and other documents to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after she talked to the president.

On Monday, Bautista said that his wife asked for a P620-million settlement, threatening him that she would go to President Rodrigo Duterte if he would not agree. This was the ultimatum his wife, Patricia Paz has sent him last June, the commissioner told the reporters.

"Yung kanyang abogado, tinext ako. Ang sabi ito raw ang terms niya at humihingi nga ng amount of P620 million. Kung hindi ko raw ibibigay pupuntahan daw niya si President Duterte. Yun ang warning,” he said.

The camp of Patricia responded to the Commissioner’s statement that she was trying to extort money.

"There were negotiations about the settlement of the properties, but we never exploited anything. We never had that idea or that intent or that goal to extort money because it was a negotiation to settle the properties. It’s a very peculiar situation," says Martin Loon, the legal counsel of Patricia’s camp in a separate TV interview.

"I do not remember telling him anything. I just told him that his wife is considering bringing it to the attention of the President or the attention of higher authorities. I think that was the context of what was said,” he added.
