On National Heroes Day: President Duterte honors the modern heroes by giving Kalasag award to beneficiaries

President Rodrigo Duterte at the Libingan ng mga Bayani to commemorate the National Heroes Day



Monday- August 28 is a regular holiday as the Philippines commemorate the National Heroes Day.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte leads the ceremony with the theme 'Taong Bayan: Ang Bagong Bayani ng Bayan', at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

In the program, the president gives honor to the Killed-in-Action (KIA) soldiers and Killed-in-Police Operations (KIPO) officers in Marawi City by awarding the Order of Lapu-Lapu (Kalasag) Award to its beneficiaries.

In Duterte’s National Heroes Day message, he urged the Filipinos to follow our heroes by becoming heroes in their own private ways by joining the government in building a stronger nation.

The president lauded the men and women who helped lay the foundation of the nation. He also said that the nation will be forever grateful for the sacrifices of those who died fighting for peace, named or unnamed heroes.

On Sunday, August 27, President Duterte also paid homage to the country’s national heroes recognizing their contributions to nation building and independence.

"Their courage, leadership and wisdom paved the way for us to enjoy the blessings of freedom, independence and democracy. They have dedicated their lives to ensure that future generations will have a life that is full and comfortable,” the president said.

"Let us honor them by upholding the rule of law, protecting our nation and fostering goodwill among ourselves," he added.

President Duterte also said to harness the same virtues and vowed that his administration will continue to fight against lawlessness, criminality and poverty that deter the country from achieving its full potential. "We will harness the same virtues,"

"As we commemorate the life and works of our national heroes, we must continue to embrace their ways in our daily undertakings. Let us emulate their example as we continue to realize our ideals and aspirations for ourselves and for our country," he said.

Vice President Leni Robredo was also present at the celebration of heroes’ day at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
