Palace tells EU Lawmakers to respect PH decision on De Lima's case

European lawmakers calls out to the Philippine government to release Senator Leila De lima immediately by proposing a draft resolution to drop the cases filed against the lady senator.

The parliamentarians raised the following issues in a joint resolution posted on the European Parliament Website.

  • adequate security for De Lima while in detention and a fair trial "recalling the right to the presumption of innocence,
  • dropping of all politically motivated charges against her, and
  • an end any further acts of harassment against her."

On the other hand, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that European parliaments should respect the Philippine government's decision on De lima's case.

"You know, they seem to have a misunderstanding of what's happening to De Lima. The lady is being charged with crime, not political persuasions, so I think they ought to respect that," said Abella.

While the European lawmakers are so concerned about the jailed senator, Filipinos are still in full support to president Rodrigo Duterte and the government's decision following the law to prosecute Leila De lima for her crimes.
